The 2008 World Champion mastered his rapidly deteriorating tyres to hold off charging team mate Jenson Button and wrap up another one-two finish for the McLaren team. Fernando Alonso took the final podium spot ahead of the Red Bull duo of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber who never really looked in control of their tyres. The day had already started badly for Webber, who was demoted to 7th place on the starting grid for changing a gearbox. Nico Rosberg finished 6th for Mercedes ahead of Robert Kubica. Sebastien Buemi, who briefly led early on for Toro Rosso took 8th whilst the two Force India's of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Adrian Sutil rounded out the top 10.

Tyre Strategy Decides Race

As the lights went out, pole sitter Hamilton was able to hold off Vettel into the first corner, while further back, a jump start from Vitaly Petrov forced him into the side of Pedro de la Rosa as both went off the track. Into turn 2, Felipe Massa and Liuzzi became involved in a tug of war, resulting in the Force India pointing the wrong direction and both pitting for new front wings. Hamilton's charging start quickly came to a halt when his soft tyres gave out, allowing Vettel through and forcing the Mclaren into the pits. With Alonso, Vettel, Button and Buemi sharing the lead for the next 5 laps, Webber was left at the front, followed by team mate Vettel, all seemingly under control for Red Bull.

Race Comes Back to McLaren

However, as so many times this season, things began to unravel for Red Bull, as first Vettel's and then eventually Webber's tyres gave out. Further back, Hamilton passed Alonso for second, after the Spaniard was hampered by the slow moving Karun Chandhok. Webber, who had built up an 11 second lead over the Brit, quickly saw this evaporated in a matter of laps, before the inevitable happened, and Hamilton was through into the lead. Webber pitted and re-joined 5th behind Vettel, leaving the top 3 to battle it out for the win, and hope that their tyres would not last. It wasn't to be though, as Hamilton held on to take his second Montreal victory.
