They run up the mountain passing weary, breathless climbers who trudge, 'pole, pole' (slowly, slowly in Swahili) up the steep winding path. They carry massive load – bags, tents, cooking pots, water, food and gas cylinders. They go to bed last and get up first - these are the porters of Kilimanjaro.
The Hierarchy
The guide and assistant guide remain with the climbers, ensuring they proceed slowly to avoid altitude sickness. But don't think these guides have always had it so easy. They also began as porters. Their first job would have been 'tea boy' – the bottom rung of the ladder which culminates in becoming a head guide. The tea boy gets up first to prepare the tea for the climbers and the crew and he goes to bed last, after washing up and cleaning up the camp. The tea boy is usually the guy who has the worst clothing and footwear. This is how it has always been, since Dr. Hans Meyer, the first European to summit Kili, climbed the mountain in 1889.
