The inside of the nose consists of 2 nasal cavities divided by a nasal septum and 3 pairs of turbinates (superior, middle and inferior), bony bulges in the walls of the nasal cavities. The nasal cavities are mainly passages for breathing, performing other functions like olfaction, warming and humidification of inhaled air and filtering out foreign bodies from it.
The external nose, the structure seen as a projection on the face, is largely made up of a framework of bone and cartilage giving it its rigid shape.
