On March 16, 2011, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon concluded a visit to Egypt. While in Cairo, Cannon met with the Prime Minister of Egypt, Essam Sharaf, Foreign Minister Nabil Al-Araby as well as the Secretary-General of Arab League and other Egyptians.

In a news release, "Canada Announces $11 Million Assistance Package for Egypt and Milddle-East-North Africa Region," issued the evening the meetings concluded, Cannon announced that money would be given to countries in the region over a five year period.

“As Canadians, we cannot simply hope, we must help. We cannot simply applaud change, we must act,” said Cannon. The money will be given to assist the development of democratic institutions in the country, including strengthening the media, assistance with youth employment and aiding in elections.
